1998: The Night a Galit Levi Dress Won Eurovision

Designer Galit Levi

In May 1998, Dana International walked on stage at the Eurovision Song Contest in Birmingham to perform “Diva.” A dress had been prepared for her by Jean Paul Gaultier. At the last minute, she chose a dress by Galit Levi instead. She won.

For Galit Levi, who had founded her studio in Tel Aviv just three years earlier, it was the moment her work was seen around the world.

From a rooftop studio

Galit’s first studio was an informal workroom on the roof of her parents’ house. Unable to find a wedding dress that reflected her own taste, she designed one herself, in classic lace with pink sparkling studs and gold wires. Requests for more followed, and in 1995, at 22, she founded Galit Levi Design.

What came next

A year after Eurovision, a Galit Levi gown won the title of most beautiful dress at Miss World 1999. Her collections went on to Harrods and Harvey Nichols, she showed at the Haute Couture week of AltaRoma in Rome, and more than 50,000 brides have since worn her designs. In 2019 her dress won the most beautiful dress title again, at Miss International.
